Chemical Name: POTASSIUM CITRATE (poe-TASS-ee-um SIH-trayt)
This medicine is a urinary alkalinizing agent used to prevent certain types of kidney stones. It may also be used to treat certain conditions of the blood and body tissues and other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking medicines containing aluminum such as aluminum hydroxide and sucralfate, or potassium-sparing "water-pills". ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking amphetamines, sulfonylurea diabetes medicines such as glyburide, tetracycline antibiotics, lithium, medicine for high blood pressure and heart conditions (ACE inhibitors), salicylates such as aspirin, or decongestant medicines such as ephedrine or pseudoephedrine. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including heart problems or damage, difficulty swallowing, blockage in your intestine or stomach, peptic ulcer, serious kidney problems, urinary tract infection, uncontrolled diabetes, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have high levels of potassium in you blood or toxic levels of aluminum in your body. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using this medicine.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. SWALLOW WHOLE. Do not break, crush, chew, or suck on the tablet before swallowing. TAKE THIS MEDICINE after meals with a full glass of water (8 oz/240 ml). DO NOT LIE DOWN for 30 minutes after taking this medicine. DRINKING EXTRA FLUIDS while you are taking this medicine is recommended. Check with your doctor or nurse for instructions. If you have problems swallowing this medicine or if it sticks in your throat, check with your doctor. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. Take this medicine regularly to receive the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take this medicine at the same times each day. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT EXCEED the recommended dose of this medicine. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. Medical and/or laboratory tests such as potassium blood levels may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. DO NOT USE A SALT SUBSTITUTE while you are taking this medicine. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes kaolin, antacids containing aluminum, or medicine containing pseudoephedrine or ephedrine. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy.
SIDE EFFECTS, that may occur while taking this medicine include loose stools or diarrhea, upset stomach, nausea, or vomiting. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience weakness, confusion, tingling of hands or feet, black/tarry stools, severe stomach pain, or vomit that looks like coffee-grounds. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include sluggishness, weakness, confusion, irregular heartbeat, or fainting.
DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
