According
to Howard Gardner, Ph.D., intelligence equals the ability to resolve
genuine problems or difficulties and also the ability to find or create
problems. This becomes the foundation of learning.
Dr.
Gardner has discovered that every individual has an "intellectual
profile"; each person has specific talents. Because of this, he
has divided human intelligence into 8 basic categories:
1. Linguistic ? speaking
and writing ability, including proper grammar in one?s own language
and also ease with foreign languages.
2. Musical ? ability to
recognize and use pitch, tone and rhythm.
3. Logical-Mathematical
? ability to handle long strings of reasoning, long calculations and
can understand and manipulate abstractions.
4. Spatial ? ability to
recognize and mentally manipulate shapes and to move objects, create
mental images and to visually perceive the visual world.
5. Bodily-Kinesthetic ?
an intelligence rooted in body movements; having extremely good coordination,
reflexes and skill with moving objects.
6. Interpersonal ? ability
to "read" other people well.
7. Personal ? deep knowledge
of one?s own self. Acutely tuned to own emotions and uses this to understand
own emotions and behavior.
8. Naturalistic ? ability
to apply knowledge of the natural world to solving problems.
