Floral Fare
Some flowers and even weeds are edible, adding floral food
fare to your garden. For example, you can use dandelion greens in your
salad and wild sorrel in your soup!
Unfortunately, store-bought flowers should not be used; they
have usually been sprayed to discourage pests.
Consider planting a small section of your garden with edible
flowers. This creates a garden that is beautiful, colorful and functional.
Some
plants that you may want to consider are nasturtiums, marigolds, primroses,
violets, pansies and various geraniums (true geraniums are delicate,
small and pale in color). The geraniums will fill in as the season for
primroses and violas passes. Put in a few fragrant, old-fashioned roses.
Day lilies, tiger lilies, spider mums, anchusa, borage, mallows and
tansy are nice additions. This makes for a beautiful, old-fashioned
garden; part annual and part perennial. Seen from a nearby window, it
is both cheery and useful.
