7 Do nots for a Cold:
Did you know that
colds are caused by one group made up of hundreds of viruses? These
viruses infect the mucous membranes of your nose and throat and destroy
the cells in the linings. This causes pain, irritation and congestion.
Within a few days your body will recognize its attacker and begin fighting
it off.
The following tips
are adapted from The American Academy of Family Physicians’ Family Health
and Medical Guide:
Seven Do nots For
a Cold
1. If you have a fever,
don‚t cover up under too many blankets or take a hot shower. It may
raise your temperature higher.
2. Don‚t smoke or be around
fumes.
3. Don‚t starve your body
of food or liquids. Your immune system needs all the help it can get.
4. Don‚t make too strong
of a gargle solution. You want to soothe your throat, not irritate it
further. Keep the ratio of ?-1 teaspoon in 8 ounces of water.
5. Don‚t overdo it on your
exercise routine. This stresses your immune system and may keep you
sick for a longer period.
6. Don‚t go overboard with
the vitamin C. Too much can lead to diarrhea or kidney stones.
7. Don‚t overuse those
OTC (over the counter) decongestant nasal sprays. Use them for no more
than three days. If you become dependant on it, you may make your congestion
worse. Plain saline sprays are best. They can relieve that dry, itchy
feeling.
