Chemical Name: SALICYLIC ACID (sal-i-SILL-ik AS-id)
This medicine is a keratolytic used to aid in removing excessive keratin in certain skin conditions.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including kidney or liver problems, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Use of this medicine in children under age 2 is not recommended. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of giving this medicine to your child. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using this medicine.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. It is recommended that you apply this medicine at bedtime unless your doctor gives you different instructions. Wet or soak the affected area in water for 5 minutes before you apply this medicine. Gently rub the medicine in until it is evenly distributed. Wash your hands immediately after using this medicine, unless your hands are part of the treated area. Apply a bandage or wrap the area after applying the medicine, unless your doctor has told you otherwise. In the morning, wash the affected area to remove the medicine. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 to 25 degrees C), away from heat and light. Do not freeze. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU HAVE HAD A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine, to aspirin, or to any medicine containing aspirin. A severe reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you have a question about whether you are allergic to this medicine, contact your doctor or pharmacist. IF YOU EXPERIENCE difficulty breathing; tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or if you develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately. Do not use any more of this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or use this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. This medicine may interfere with some laboratory tests. Make sure your doctors and the laboratory personnel know you are using this medicine. Apply this medicine to the affected area only. Do not use this medicine on healthy skin. Do not use any other medicines or drying products on your skin unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. If you experience dryness or irritation, a mild cream or lotion may be used. Avoid getting this medicine in your eyes, on the inside of your nose and mouth, or on your genitals. If contact with eyes occurs, flush with water for 15 minutes. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE on open skin wounds, moles, birthmarks, genital warts, or warts growing hair. THIS MEDICINE CONTAINS A SALICYLATE which has been linked to Reye's syndrome. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE IN CHILDREN OR TEENAGERS during or after chickenpox, flu, or other viral infection without checking with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist for more information. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN CHILDREN because they may be more sensitive to the effects of this medicine. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while using this medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while using this medicine include red or peeling skin. If they continue or become severe, check with your doctor. An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, loss of hearing, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), sluggishness, rapid or difficult breathing, diarrhea, and mental disturbances. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed.
If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, check with your doctor. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF YOU WILL BE USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, be sure to obtain necessary refills before your supply runs out.
