Chemical Name: LEVOCARNITINE (lee-voe-KAR-ni-teen)
Levocarnitine is an amino acid used to treat carnitine deficiency. Levocarnitine may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor. If you have serious kidney disease such as ESRD/dialysis, the intravenous (IV) form of carnitine should be used. The reason is that large doses of carnitine by mouth for long periods of time may result in serious side effects (e.g., seizures), interfere with dialysis (increased nitrogen wastes), and cause "fishy odor" to occur.
INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including epilepsy, severe kidney disease, any allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.
Follow the directions for using Levocarnitine provided by your doctor. Levocarnitine MAY BE POURED into drinks or liquid foods. If Levocarnitine upsets your stomach, mix it with a liquid and sip it over several minutes. Finish all of the liquid. Discard any unused Levocarnitine in the opened container. TAKE Levocarnitine WITH FOOD or meals to prevent stomach upset. STORE THE UNOPENED CONTAINERS OF Levocarnitine at room temperature, away from heat and light. Do not freeze. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF Levocarnitine, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. DO NOT USE D,L-carnitine(vitamin BT) which is available over-the-counter and in health food stores. D,L-carnitine may cause carnitine deficiency.
Possible side effects
